This is particularly visible with the upcoming presidential election. The intention of Whatsjust presents is to bridge divides by providing tools to have critical conversations in a productive, informed, and connecting way. One of the paths to achieving this is through the Critical Conversations podcast where host, Dr. Abigail Henson, interviews community members, innovators, and experts on critical topics around social justice.Learn to be Vulnerable is one of the steps in the upcoming podcast season’s 10-step toolkit to having a critical conversation. Vulnerability is a difficult skill, but learning it in community can ease the process. Join us in a live taping of this critical conversation between Dr. Abigail Henson and trauma-informed psychologist and author of Break the Cycle: A Guide to Healing Intergenerational Trauma, Dr. Mariel Buque at Walter Studios on March 21st at 6:15pm. The event will open with a 15-minute healing Soundbath by Dr. Buqué to allow audience members to collectively drop into the space.Conversation topics will include: How your family history influences your approach to conflict and relationships How to be (safely) vulnerable and use vulnerability as a connecting tool How to break the cycle of harmDr. Mariel Buqué Bio:Dr. Mariel Buqué is an Afro-Dominican psychologist. She received her doctorate in counseling psychology from Columbia University, where she also trained as a fellow in holistic mental health. She is a world-renowned intergenerational trauma expert and the author of the book Break the Cycle: A Guide to Healing Intergenerational Trauma. Her clinical framework is holistic and infuses ancient and indigenous healing practices into a modern, comprehensive therapeutic approach.She has utilized her training in holistic care to integrate holistic practices, like sound bath meditation and breathwork, into therapy, which has helped to deepen trauma healing for an entire generation of clients. She additionally provides healing workshops to Fortune 100 companies including Google, Capital One, and Meta and lectures within the psychology department at Columbia University. Dr. Buqué is widely sought out for her clinical expertise and trauma approach and has been featured on major media outlets including The Today Show, Good Morning America, and ABC News. She has been named as a School of Greatness’s 100 Greatest People Doing Good in 2022 and an inaugural Verywell Mind 25 Mental Health Champion.Dr. Abigail Henson Bio:Abigail Henson is an assistant professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Arizona State University. She earned her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Temple University in 2020. Dr. Henson's research focuses on issues of transformative justice, program evaluation, and the impact of corrections and policing on identity, families, and communities. Her work strives to shift narratives and eliminate stigmas by both engaging strengths-based human-centered frameworks and applying a critical gaze toward systemic injustices.In addition to her academic work, Dr. Henson is also the host of the "WhatsJust presents Critical Conversations” podcast, which features interviews with scholars and experts on a variety of topics related to justice, inequality, and social change. Dr. Henson also co-hosts a YouTube series, "Office Hours with Abbie and Juwan," where she and her colleague Juwan Bennett have deep yet casual discussions on issues related to justice and transformation. She believes in the importance of disseminating research findings and engaging with the community to promote social change and justice. Beyond social media, Abigail has participated in public conversations at the National Academies of Sciences and Arnold Ventures on engaging community and shifting perceptions of safety.
